Pablo Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. During his lifetime, Picasso moved through several different stages of painting styles. His earliest stage was the Blue Period . He then moved through the Rose Period, Cubism, the Classical Period and then the Surrealism movement. During the Blue Period, Picasso painted The Old Guitarist . This painting shows an old, weak and poor man clinging to a guitar. The guitar is the only color in the painting, highlighting the man's only hope of survival. Like Picasso, the old man relies on the arts for his living, but he is living in poverty and despair.
