Breeding for desirable traits is something that was second nature to our ancestors.
They would have considered it absurd to think about “culture” in Boasian terms —
and not simply because Boas divorced cultural evolution from biological evolution!
It is also absurd to think that the moral animal — to the precise extent that he is moral — is engaged in an intergenerational _normative_ process of of _organic_ creation. That some monk with a pea garden formalized and scribed fragmentary knowledge governing this process has been used to blind us to the agri-cultural evidence going back to the dawn of civilization that artificial selection of genetic trains was of a piece with “cultural norms”.
